Two little words – due diligence. They sound important. Very legal! And it’s true. Due diligence is a crucial component of the Occupational Health & Safety Legislation in Canada. It protects both the employee and the employer.
But what does it mean?
In a very formal way, it means the level of judgment, care, prudence, determination, and activity that a person would reasonably be expected to do under particular circumstances.
In an informal way, it means that as an employer we must keep our employees safe and take any and all action to make that happen.
If an incident were to occur on a work site, the employer must prove that the very best measures were taken to teach the employee what to do in case of possible harmful situations and how to prevent them in the first place.
How can video help maintain due diligence?
People connect to video. Sure, you can give them a manual to read but often it gets ignored. An employee may be able to close their eyes or lie that they actually read the manual. However, they cannot close their ears! Video, which combines images and audio, makes a much deeper impact and the information is actually retained.
65% of people claim they are visual learners and studies show that 95% of a video message is retained compared to text at 10%.
